Family History - Germans/Polish in Thornton Steward

Added on 17 September 2012

We have had an update from a previous contributor, Julie Brutnell (see 22 April entry below), which also relates to the news item received a few days beforehand concerning the Winn family. Julie can be contacted on: heavensguide@hotmail.com.

Hi again
I have been shown some 1780 dessert spoons from the Winns of Thornton Steward and on the cutlery is etched an Eagle ... very similar in design to Poland's eagle crest .
Also have found that Cnut entered York with an army named The Wends ... anybody got any idea why it's called WENDSleydale ? Could the foreign names in Thornton Steward be connected back in the past to when Cnut invaded York and left his people in charge ?
Regards

Julie
